Step-by-Step Guide: What an Thailand Customer Must Do to Receive an Overseas Online Purchase

Many of our customers in Thailand ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ญ ask what happens after they place an order ๐Ÿ›’ from our shop in Hong Kong ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ฐ, especially when it comes to customs ๐Ÿ›ƒ, import tax ๐Ÿ’ธ, postal notices ๐Ÿ“ฉ, delivery ๐Ÿšš, and where they can actually receive the package ๐Ÿ“ฆ. To make things easier ๐Ÿ˜Š, we have prepared this friendly guide โœ๏ธ๐Ÿ“š that explains the full post-purchase process step by step ๐Ÿ”ข, including what documents to prepare ๐Ÿ“„, how fees are collected ๐Ÿ’ณ, what to do if Thailand Post sends a failed-payment notice โš ๏ธ, and how the parcel finally reaches your hands ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ . This overview is based on Thai Customs guidance for postal imports and current reporting on tax collection for imported online purchases in Thailand.

  1. Wait for the parcel to arrive in Thailand. After you complete your purchase, your main job is to monitor the tracking and wait for the parcel to reach Thailand for customs review. Postal parcels entering Thailand are screened by customs before release to Thailand Post or another delivery operator.
  2. Check whether the parcel is duty-free or taxable. Thai Customs says postal imports are separated into categories, and low-value postal items may qualify for exemption if they meet the applicable conditions, while taxable parcels are assessed by customs before handover for delivery. Thai Customs also states that goods sent by post with FOB value not exceeding 40,000 baht can still be processed in the postal-import channel, but customs will calculate duty and taxes if the parcel is liable.
  3. Watch for a notice, SMS, call, or tracking update. If duty or tax is payable, the recipient is normally notified how and where to collect the item and pay the amount due. Current reporting also says that, for postal imports, tax is assessed at the parcelโ€™s point of entry and the recipient may be asked to pay before or at delivery depending on the handling method.
  4. Prepare your identification and any requested supporting documents. If the post office or customs asks for proof of identity, bring your ID card, passport, or other official document in the name of the recipient. If customs needs more information to assess the parcel, you may also need to show an order confirmation, invoice, payment proof, or item value details so the charges can be finalized.
  5. Pay the customs duty, VAT, and postal handling charge if required. Thai Customs states that for taxable postal parcels, Thailand Post collects duty and taxes on behalf of Customs after Customs calculates the amount. Reporting on the 2026 policy says recipients may pay by QR code when the item is delivered to the home, while other postal items may need payment at the post office; older recipient guidance commonly also mentions a small postal handling fee collected with the charges.
  6. If you receive a message such as โ€œFailed to pay (a notice has been issued to the recipient to request to receive the item because the fee has to be paid),โ€ act quickly. This kind of message generally means the parcel was not released because payment is still outstanding, so you need to follow the notice instructions instead of waiting for normal delivery. Thai Customs says the recipient will receive instructions on how and where to collect the goods and pay duty and taxes, and recipient guidance indicates that some notices require visiting the specified Thai post office with your ID and the notice, while other cases may require going to the Postal Customs Service Division if the amount is not yet stated.
  7. Go to the location named in the notice if home delivery payment is not available. If the notice tells you to collect and pay at a particular post office, bring the notice, your ID, and any invoice or payment record that helps confirm the parcel value. Community recipient reports also describe going to the collection counter, showing the paperwork, and paying there before the parcel is released.
  8. Cooperate if Customs requests inspection or extra review. Some postal imports may be held for additional checking, especially if the item value is unclear, the parcel needs inspection, or supporting documents are missing. Recent reporting says that when pickup at the post office is required, extra checks can add several days in some cases.
  9. Receive the parcel at home or collect it from the post office. Once payment and customs release are completed, the parcel is either delivered to your address or held for collection at the designated post office, depending on the delivery method and the notice you received. Thai Customs specifically says recipients are notified how and where to collect the goods and pay the charges.
  10. Keep your receipt and import-payment record. After payment, keep the receipt, notice, and any postal or customs payment record until the parcel is safely received and checked. These records are useful if there is any question about release, payment, or delivery status afterward.

Package Sequence

  1. Parcel enters Thailand. The package reaches Thailand and enters the postal import process for customs review.
  2. Customs screens and classifies the parcel. Customs decides whether the parcel is exempt, taxable in the postal stream, or needs formal declaration because of higher value or other conditions. Thai Customs states that goods sent to the same recipient at the same time with FOB value above 40,000 baht require import declaration submission rather than normal postal-duty collection.
  3. Customs calculates duty and taxes. For taxable postal items, Customs calculates the customs value, duty, and taxes before release to Thailand Post for collection from the recipient.
  4. Recipient is notified. The customer receives instructions telling them whether to pay on delivery, scan and pay, or collect the parcel and pay at a specified post office or customs-related office.
  5. Recipient pays required charges. Payment is made through the method stated in the notice or delivery process, such as QR code payment, post office payment, or payment upon receipt where available.
  6. Parcel is released and handed to postal delivery. After successful payment and any required checks, the parcel is released for final delivery or pickup.
  7. Customer gets the package. The customer either receives the package at the delivery address or picks it up at the named post office.
